rock and roll

In a firefight there comes a moment of release. It’s manifested by pulling the trigger. Before that instant there’s restraint, tension, sometimes fear. But the moment. That is when you release all that is pent-up. The moment this song is about is unleashed fury, exhilaration, satisfaction even. It is a visceral feeling. This song is a musical interpretation of that, and it resides on a ridgeline between two cliffs: survival and annihilation. It’s neither moral nor immoral. It simply is.

The cacophony of sounds in a firefight have a rhythm and harmony all their own too. And the song’s M-240 fire and CAS call at the end are examples. The moment isn’t always a trigger pull, sometimes it can be close air support. When you need it, CAS is a wonderful thing.

This song invokes firepower, destruction, and violence. Difficult subjects. But it was a part of my previous profession and has stayed with me, for better or worse, surfacing occasionally, sometimes without warning. This can bother me, particularly because of my Buddhist philosophy. But there you have it, irreconcilable opposites.

This song will not make sense to some people. For the uninitiated how could it? For those who’ve felt this exhilaration, you’ll know what it’s about.
